Foster Kids at the Courthouse
Forgotten Children display appeared on Wichita County Court House lawn
On April 9th there were 311 children on the lawn
of the Wichita County Courthouse. The children weren't real, but were life size
posters representing each child from Wichita County that was in state care
because of abuse or neglect in 2008.
"It's important that the community understand just how many children from Wichita
County are in care," says Child Advocates Executive Director Emily Streeton. "Wichita
County's abuse rate is over twice the state average. We need to do something to change
that."
This spring, over 100 local CASA programs across the country are holding Forgotten
Children events to find solutions for America's children in foster care. These
compelling events feature hundreds of life size posters of children, each holding a
personal message from an actual foster child.
Streeton says she decided to bring the display here because of the high numbers recently
released by The Department of Family and Protective Services. "All of these children
deserve a voice in court. That's where Child Advocates come in. It is so important
that each child has their best interests represented. In order to do that, we need
community members to volunteer to become CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates). If
you can't become a volunteer, then we hope that you will find a way to help us
financially and make it possible for us to continue our work with these children."
